The history of Purely

Purely is located in an old-fashioned house in Furumachi, a castle-adjacent neighborhood of Kumamoto City. The building is a restored and renovated 140-year-old kominka-style house.

Kumamoto Castle was constructed by Kato Kiyomasa in 1591 to 1606. Furumachi, the neighborhood where Purely is located, is said to have existed even before the castle was built. Furumachi was a merchant town, full of shops pedaling goods that lent the names to each neighborhood that they lined: Komeyamachi (rice sellers), Saikumachi (craftworkers), Gofukumachi (tailors), Kaijiyamachi (metalsmiths), and so on. Goods were still shipped by boat back when this house was built, and the Tsuboi River just behind Purely was a major artery for regional distribution. The legacy of this is still evident in the basement of the Purely Restaurant, where there is a stone wall that is said to have been formerly used as an anchorage point for a moneychanger.

Burned down during the Satsuma Rebellion, but then rebuilt

The previous building burned down during the Satsuma Rebellion (1877) during the Meiji Period, but it was rebuilt and then later renovated into Purely in 2005. While the building again suffered tremendous damage during the Kumamoto Earthquakes of 2016, in 2017, the building was once again renovated using a design by Mr. Nobuhiko Sakai of the Fudo Design Architectural Office. This renovation kept the quality old-fashioned elements intact to complete the current Purely building.

Purely Today

The basement-floor restaurant has a floor laid with wooden bricks. The sound of footsteps on the wood has a wonderful timbre.

Wooden bricks were once used in laying the footpaths of Tojinmachi in the Meiji Period. These bricks have been laid once again to pass on the legacy of the building’s previous owners to the new generation at Purely. The result is a truly unique space.

We also have a private room that is a renovated tearoom.

Please make reservations at least three days in advance. The private room is available for use from 11:30 to 14:30 (Last order taken at 14:00). This room can seat parties of four to eight adults. The room’s screen doors were handmade from Japanese paper by traditional craft master Junpei Kanazashi of Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Forget about the worries of your day and lose yourself in this nostalgic space. We eagerly await your reservation.
